But that is exactly how roulette is played.  A dealer/banker mans a roulette table which carries a small wheel.  The wheel is divided into 38 portions of alternating red and black, upon which the numbers 1 to 36 and the figures 0 and 00 are arranged.  (This is for the American version of the roulette; the European version does not have the 00 figure, therefore having only 37 portions.)  Around the rim of the wheel is a track on which a small white ball runs.  When the wheel is spun, the ball is supposed to go to the opposite direction.

Roulette first saw action as a gambling game in the 1840s, when a Frenchman named Francois Blanc brought it to the gamblers of Hamburg, Germany.  Gambling was prohibited by French law at that time.  From Germany, the game traveled to Monte Carlo, which we all know is the casino capital of Europe.  From Monte Carlo, the game then went to England and then to the shores of the United States.

In Europe, there are only 37 numbers on the wheel – the numbers 1 to 36 and just one 0.  In the United States, there are 38 numbers, the 38th figure being 00.  The 00 increases the house odds, and this is why the European version of the roulette is more popular amongst players.
